Naaaaaah!!! I thought as a little girl in the audience at the circus, when I revealed that the trapeze artist was the same person as the dog trainer.
She had only changed her clothes and hairstyle! What can you do, thought the little girl and almost felt like something.
The reality was just… the harsh reality.
.
Today, in the middle of a pandemic, when I study the mountain of burned plane tickets and the pile of canceled fairs, I realize that this is exactly what it is all about.
How skillful of that circus director to recruit performers with many talents.
In year three of a pandemic, you get to jump into the tractor and plow new innovative furrows next to the sticky unusable pandemic soil.
Little did I know how good and easy my job was before, when you could go to Kastrup and enter the evening cart to Paris or Delhi and do wholesale shopping.
All served boom boom.
.
NOW… when I'm sitting around 24/7 looking for inspiration and stuff, being a creative director is like a long drawn out labor.
The catalogs I get sent to me are watered down, uninspiring, I see everything with the experienced eyes of the producer.
I see. I have 20 years in the industry. Nothing escapes the little circus-going girl's scrutiny.
Today, you have to be an unearthly skilled circus director to please the popcorn-hungry audience, who have plowed through all the series on the pay channels both forwards and backwards.
We who run "fairgrounds" must be able to serve that little extra. We must not be experienced as watered down, pale, hideous copies of ourselves.
.
Hand on heart, that's what we live for, us circus directors; that the audience should feel good, that it should be a success.
That it should be widely known that circus Reunion is WOW!
.
So much we have learned in recent years. So many times you thought NO, it doesn't work.
But then it does. GOING. If you peel off layer upon layer of yourself and your comfort, most things DO.
Today I am comfortable with constant crisis situations. I move habitually in and out of my large walk-in closet of various stage clothes.
Many years later, the little detail-revealing girl from the audience stepped into the circus director's costume herself and today, in the middle of a pandemic, it fits better than ever.
